Don’t let the scales dictate you and your progress!

It’s really easy to focus and obsess over the scale weight. Been there. Done that.

Even now,, as a person who comes from a background of eating disorders, I can feel a little uneasy seeing the scales go up or down.

One thing I’ve learnt though, is that so many factors can make your weight fluctuate. Of course it’s a good tool to use, but there are also so many other ways to track your progress. So it’s important to not let the scales be your sole way of measuring progress!

Let’s look at just a few of the other ways:

Body measurements

  • How your clothes are fitting you
  • Complements you are receiving from friends, family and even strangers
  • Your strength within the gym- are you able to lift heavier? Do more reps on a certain weight?
  • Your fitness levels within the gym- are you beating your previous scores/times on cardio equipment?
  • Your energy levels
  • Your sleep quality
  • How you feel within yourself
  • Ask yourself how many of these things are you utilising?

I check in with both my PT and online coaching clients weekly and each week I make sure that we are using some of these other tools to measure their progress.

One client started off struggling to complete bodyweight squats. Over the coming months they was able to squat 40kg comfortably on their own in one of their sessions! WIN!

Had the scales gone down that week? No. But did they feel good in themselves because they were seeing progress in an alternative way than just the scales? YES!

If you want help to shift your focus away from the scales and to feel your greatest; mind, body and soul. Then either send me an email or fill out the contact form on my website!
